LONDON, England (Reuters) -U. S. and European governments are looking into the world's largest prescription drug company that makes Viagra, the world's top-selling prescription drug, after it was found to have been laced with the chemical compound sildenafil. The agency has not yet approved Viagra to treat erectile dysfunction, and the Food and Drug Administration has yet to issue a warning to the public.
Viagra is the world's top-selling prescription drug, costing between $2 billion and $3 billion each year, but a leading U. drug maker has said it is not aware of the risk of taking the drug. Pfizer, the world's largest drug maker, is planning to produce the drug, but the drug could potentially cause liver failure and even death.
Pfizer, a U. biotech firm, said on Tuesday it would not be selling the drug to the public until it has received a regulatory review. It will continue to sell the drug under the brand name Revatio, which is approved by the FDA for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension.
Viagra is a well-known prescription drug in Europe and the U. K., and the drug has become one of Pfizer's most sought-after drugs. Viagra is one of the world's top-selling drugs and is among Pfizer's top sellers. Pfizer's Viagra sales fell 11 percent to $2.2 billion last year, but the drug's sales in the U. K. fell to $4.7 billion last year, according to IMS Health, a consumer health information services company. Europe's biggest drugmaker, Mylan, has said it would only sell Revatio if it had the drugs in its portfolio, but the FDA has not approved it to sell in the U.
The agency is reviewing whether a warning was issued about the drug, which Pfizer said has not yet been approved for U. sale. That would be "notification," the FDA said in a statement.
The FDA is also reviewing whether Pfizer's products, which are based in the U. K., are still sold in the U. S., and whether the company will be forced to pull out of the European Union. Pfizer's patent on Viagra expires in 2013. The FDA also is considering whether to approve the drug from other countries, including Canada, Italy, and Germany, the U.
A Pfizer spokesman said the company would not comment on whether Pfizer would be selling a product to the public.
"We do not have any information on whether the regulatory agency has given regulatory approval to sell Viagra, nor does Pfizer have any information about how to proceed in this matter," said Mick Foy, Pfizer's executive vice president for research. "Pfizer has made clear we will not sell Viagra to the public."
Pfizer has been looking into the problem of Viagra in Europe, and it has been trying to keep the market for the drug open and available for widespread use.
It has said the drug would be manufactured and sold by Pfizer's subsidiary, Pfizer Inc. It was first discovered in 1996, but it has since become famous for its Viagra. The drug has been around for more than a century, but its popularity has increased in recent years, as the patent for Viagra has expired.
